Grade 5 Math Number and Operations Base Ten

5th Grade Math Number and Operations Base Ten

In 5th grade  Number and Operations are covered  in Base Ten and in Fractions.

We will focus on Base Ten Number and Operations here.

In the fifth grade, students usually learn about adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers with a base of ten. This means understanding place value, regrouping or carrying and borrowing, and using the standard algorithms for these operations.

Students will learn to line up the numbers based on their place value and add or subtract the ones, tens, hundreds, etc., and columns separately. They may also learn how to use the partial sums method or the standard algorithm, which involves carrying or borrowing.

Students will learn the standard algorithm for multiplication, which is to multiply the digits in each place value and then regroup as needed. They will also learn how to simplify multiplication problems by using the distributive property.

Students will learn the standard algorithm for division: divide the digits in each place value and regroup as needed. They will also learn how to check their work by estimating and doing math in their heads.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.1| Understand the place value system.

Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

Standards: 5.NBT.A.1

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.2| Understand the place value system.

Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

Standards: 5.NBT.A.2

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.3| Understand the place value system.

Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.

Standards: 5.NBT.A.3

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.4| Understand the place value system.

Use place value understanding to round decimals to any place.

Standards: 5.NBT.A.4

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.5| Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Standards: 5.NBT.B.5

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.6| Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

Standards: 5.NBT.B.6

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.7| Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Standards: 5.NBT.B.7
