Use this worksheet to practice measuring.

Why are centimeters used as units of measure?

The metric system is a decimal system of measuring that is used all over the world. It is based on the meter, which is the base unit of length in the metric system. In the metric system based on the International System of Units, the centimeter (cm) is a unit of length (SI).

One centimeter is one-hundredth of a meter. The centimeter is a useful length unit for many everyday tasks, like figuring out how big something is or how tall someone is. It is also used in physics, engineering, and medicine, among other scientific and technical fields.

The centimeter is used as a unit of measurement because it is part of the metric system, which is made to be easy to use and understand. The metric system is based on the idea that prefixes can be used to represent multiples and fractions of the base units. For example, the centimeter is made by adding the prefix “centi-” to the meter to show that it is 1/100th of a meter. This means that many different units can be made from the base units. This makes the metric system flexible and good for many uses.
